Roofing Options

Choosing a roof is not one of the more difficult choices when remodeling or building a house, but it is still loaded with options and some are more “green” than others and some “less expensive” than others. Knowing and getting what you want and can afford means researching a bit or just take a look below at what we've simplified in one place just for you. Clay Tile Roof

The longest lasting of all roofing materials (over a century), clay tiles are natural, durable, recyclable, and come in a multitude of colors. One of the oldest roofing materials, it is so cost effective over time that it is a great option especially for warm weather climates. Yes, upfront costs are quite high with only slate being higher, that for some it may be a deterrent, but for others the charm cannot compare. Keep in mind the beauty and durability do increase home value and the lower maintenance costs add up over time also.

Wood Shake Shingle Roof

Shake shingles have that quaint look and feel that can add unmeasurable charm to a home but it does come with both benefits and drawbacks. Depending where you live would help determine whether it is even an option at all. Wood shingles are highly flammable so some insurance companies will not cover the home or at a much higher cost depending on location. Though they are all natural, beautiful and age to a beautiful color, they are also expensive and probably have the shortest life span of all roofs coming in an average 20 years. If you are looking for a green roof that is totally recyclable and comes from a controlled source then this is a great option. Be sure to check with your insurance company first.

Asphalt Shingled Roof

Asphalt Shingled RoofAsphalt is the standard roofing material you find on most homes across the country. Yet, few know that there are a multitude of colors and for Southern California, a light color or white shingled roof is not uncommon. This is known as a cool roof due to its reflective qualities that can significantly lower the temperature of the roof while reflecting heat away from your house keeping it cooler. Obviously the lower electric bills are a real plus too. No matter the color, they are the same price so choose which benefits you most.

Metal Roof

Metal RoofMetal roofs have many benefits most importantly they are long lasting, durable, and highly reflective. They are recyclable and you can even purchase a recycled metal roof in a multitude of colors to match your home or go with a light one to retain the energy benefits. A metal roof is definitely an expensive option vs. asphalt shingles, but it definitely has great benefits to consider and very few if any drawbacks besides possibly investment cost.

Slate Tile Roof

Slate Tile RoofIn some areas of the US slate tile has huge benefits. These include beauty, fire retardant, life span and they are considered a green product. The fire retardation is a huge factor for those living in fire threat areas such as California. Where many roofs last only up to a max 30 years, a slate roof can last a century or longer. Slate comes in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors allowing for diversity and uniqueness for your home. Lastly, they are environmentally safe. They last long, pieces can be recycled, and slate is chemical free.

Recycled Shingle Roof

Recycled Shingle RoofNowadays, there are plants springing up across the nation for recycling asphalt tiles. This is fantastic news. Even better, they are using the materials for tarring roads and for new roofing tiles too. These tiles are not the standard asphalt shingles, but actually stylish shingles with some looking like slate and shake shingle too. Offered in many colors, you’re sure to find one that’s just right for you. Just as durable as other asphalt shingles, you can expect them to last an average of fifty years.
